The B&H Green Spaces Forum have been asked to cascade this message:
    AVIAN / BIRD FLU
The current risk assessment for an incursion of avian influenza in the UK is MEDIUM due to the recent discovery of the disease in the Netherlands in dead mute swans that are likely to have migrated from Asia. This should be a reminder to all of us that the risk remains with migratory birds at least until the end of the migratory season, which is February.
As a result Defra have recently repeated their request to the public to use the Defra helpline (Tel 03459 33 55 77) to report findings of dead wild birds, particularly wild ducks, geese, swans, gulls or birds of prey and where more than 5 birds of any other species are found dead in the same location. Until at least the end of the migratory season for birds these notifications should ideally be referred to the Defra helpline 03459 33 55 77 or email defra.helpline@defra.gsi.gov.uk.
You should avoid touching any bird with your bare hands
(There are also instructions what to do if you keep poultry and captive birds)
